The next day Dolittle went to work and began researching tigers. He sat at his office desk,

looking through several thick textbooks that

lay open in front of him. On a notepad he jotted down facts, going back and forth from book to book, checking and rechecking information.

He heard a knock at the door. “Come in,” he called.

Mark Weller walked in. “I came to tell you that Jeremy Carson from Calnet called,” he said jubilantly. “They upped the offer—more money!”

“Great,” Dolittle said, only half listening. He continued to read his books.

“Don’t forget,” Weller said. “We’re due over there, and Calloway wants to show us off tomorrow at some investor-shareholder thing.”

“Fine,” Dolittle said without looking up.

Weller looked at the book tides. “Treating Big Cats?” he asked.

“Maya’s got a little kitten,” Dolittle explained.

“Huh?” Weller said, looking confused.

Dolittle put down his notebook and pad and leaned back in his chair. He took a deep breath and looked at Weller. “Remember when we started out in that crummy little office in that miserable neighborhood? Making almost no money?” he asked seriously.

Weller shook his head. “I’ve blocked it out. What a nightmare.”

“No,” Dolittle said. “There was something about that time and place ... an excitement. I couldn’t wait to get to work. I’d wake up and think, ‘Who am I gonna help today?’ ”

Dolittle looked at Weller, who didn’t understand him at all. “Back then I know we made a difference,” Dolittle said. “Last night I had to treat . . . some emergencies. And it was difficult. I was challenged. And it made me realize that I haven’t been paying enough attention to my patients.” He paused and looked at a framed photo of his family on the desk. “And maybe I haven’t been paying attention at home either,” he added.

Weller sighed and picked up a book from Dolittle’s desk titled Surgical Procedures for Tigers.

“Got her a little Siamese.” Dolittle flashed a big | smile. “Named her Pookie.”

Weller put the book down and frowned. “Hmmm . . . really . . . Well, anyway, the meeting’s at three o’clock, John.” He went out the door.

Dolittle buzzed for the secretary, who came right in. “Yes, Doctor?” she said.

“Diane, I need you to do me a favor. Locate a Dr. Louis Fish. He’s a vet.”

“I’m sure there must be a directory,” Diane suggested. “Does it say where he’s located?”

Dolittle picked up one of the books and opened the cover. “Let’s see if it’s in front here,” he said as he flipped through a couple of pages. He stopped when he spotted something.

“Never mind, thanks, Diane. I think I’ve got it,” he said, looking at a photograph of the smiling Dr. Fish.

He picked up the phone, asked Information for the number, and dialled. The nurse put him through to Fish.

“Is this Dr. Louis Fish, author of Cat Illnesses and Diseases?” Dolittle asked.

“Yes, it is,” Fish said. “You’ve read my book?”

“But of course!” Dolittle said. “We keep it next to the bed. It’s our Bible!”

“Well, some people do call it the definitive work on cats, but Bible?” Fish said slowly.
